Alert – Wannacry Ransomware Email Attack

wannacry

May 2017 saw the WannaCry cyberattack spread worldwide, targeting computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system by encrypting data and demanding Bitcoin ransom payments.

We have seen a new outbreak of these WannaCry emails, such as the one below:

Hello! WannaCry returned! All your devices were cracked with our program installed on them. We have perfected operation of our program, so you will not be able to get your data back after the attack.
All the information will be encrypted and then erased. Antivirus software will not be able to detect our program, while firewalls will not be able to protect you against our unique code.
Should your files be encrypted, you will lose them forever.
Our program also covers the local network, erasing data on all network-connected computers and remote servers, all cloud-stored data, and freezing website operation. We have already deployed our program on your devices.
Deletion of your data will take place on June 22, 2018, at 5:00 – 10:00 PM. All data stored on your computers, servers, and mobile devices will be destroyed. Devices working on any version of Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and Linux are subject to data erasion.
With an eye to prevent data demolition, you can pay 0.1 BTC (~$650) to the bitcoin wallet:
You must pay timely and notify us about the payment via email until 5:00 PM on June 22, 2018. After payment confirmation, we will send you instructions on how to avoid data erasion and such situations from now forward. Should you try to delete our program yourself, data erasion will commence without any delay.
To pay with bitcoins, please use localbitcoins.com or other similar platforms, or just google for other means. After payment write to us: (CHINESE Email address)

Do not respond to this email. You have not been hacked, your device has not be encrypted, and you will not have any data deleted after June 22 or any other date.
Do not worry you have not been individually targeted, millions of these emails (which look to originate from China) are being sent out by the scammers hoping that a small percentage will respond.

WannaCry is far more dangerous than other common ransomware types because of its ability to exploit critical vulnerabilities in Windows computers, which then spreads across an organisation’s entire network. Delete the email, and make sure everyone in your organisation is made aware of this latest threat.
